Gadza Annual "Te Za"

Akoefe Traditional Council Celebrates Annual Yam Festival: A Synergy of Cultural Heritage and Developmental Aspirations

AKOEFE GADZA, 27/09/2025, The Akoefe Traditional Council, under the distinguished patronage of His Majesty Togbe Edikro IV, celebrated its annual Yam Festival, a seminal event in the socio-cultural and religious calendar of the Akoefe people. The festival, a communal solidarity, was convened at the heart of the community, Akoefe Gadza, drawing together citizens, dignitaries, and well-wishers in a profound celebration of cultural continuity.

The Yam Festival, or "Te Za," as it is known in the local tongue, transcends mere festivity; it constitutes a critical mechanism for social cohesion and the reaffirmation of traditional authority. The event serves a dual purpose: to offer thanksgiving to the divine and ancestral spirits for the first harvest of the staple crop and to purify the community, ushering in a new year with renewed hope and collective purpose. This year’s observance was particularly signficant, as it provided a strategic platform for the leadership to articulate a clear vision for the community’s socio-economic advancement.

A pivotal moment in the proceedings was the official addresses delivered by Togbe Godwin Anyah’s aides, who serves as the Chamigan (spokesperson) for the Akoefe Traditional Council. With eloquent oratory, they expounded on the festival’s philosophical underpinnings, linking the bounty of the yam to the fertility of collective effort. They masterfully pivoted from themes of gratitude to a pressing contemporary concern: the imperative for infrastructural and human resource development.

On behalf of Togbe Edikro IV and the entire Traditional Council, the Chamigan aides launched a formal and impassioned appeal for financial support. They delineated a comprehensive development agenda targeting critical sectors. The appeal was made not as a plea, but as a call for partnership, inviting donors and philanthropic organizations to invest in the sustainable future of a culturally rich and organized community.

The traditional leadership is committed to transparency and accountability. "We are, therefore, seeking the collaboration of kind-hearted supporters and development-oriented partners to join us in this noble cause."

The leadership of Togbe Edikro IV has been characterized by a forward-thinking approach that seeks to harmonize the preservation of invaluable custom with the necessities of modern development. This festival exemplified this strategy, showcasing a governance model that utilizes cultural practices as a driving force for advancement.

As the festivities concluded with communal feasting on the new yam, the message from Akoefe Gadza was unequivocal. The Akoefe Traditional Council has laid out a clear developmental blueprint and stands ready to steward resources effectively. The hope remains that national and international development actors will recognize the potential of this partnership, transforming the aspirations voiced during this year's Yam Festival into tangible outcomes that will benefit generations to come.
